FAQ
Do I have to use a camera during online sessions?
If you prefer, we can talk on the phone or via your preferred online technology with audio only. The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and comfortable as we work together.
What do people talk about in counselling?
Whatever matters to them! Counselling gives you the opportunity to discuss your concerns with an empathetic, non-judgemental listener. There might be a specific issue you’d like to work on, or a range of different challenges. Check out some of the reasons people come to counselling.
How will I know if counselling is right for me?
We recommend trying one or more sessions to see how you feel. We also encourage you to ask questions along the way. Ultimately counselling is about helping you to work things out for yourself. Remember that the process is voluntary and the choice is always yours.
Isn’t it awkward to speak about personal issues if I haven’t met my counsellor in person?
Actually, sometimes it’s a little easier! For example, some people report feeling less shy. Online counselling also allows you to stay in your comfort of your home. The main strength of online counselling is its flexibility – if you are a frequent traveller or relocate often, online counselling allows you to remain with the same therapist despite your change of location.
Will you prescribe medication?
No. Only psychiatrists are allowed to do so. If we feel that medication might be suitable for you, we will recommend that you see your doctor so you can take the necessary next steps.
What’s the difference between therapy, coaching and counselling?
The most basic difference is in the time orientation – therapy looks often into the past (traumas…), coaching into the future (goals…), and counselling mostly at current challenges (present…). Our counsellors offer a range of therapies.
Will my insurance cover the cost of counselling?
An insurance refund is possible depending on the insurance scheme, and we have a direct billing option with certain international insurances. In the Netherlands, partial coverage is possible in most cases through aanvullende verzekering (extra package) – please find more info here. There are several things you should check first, however, to make sure you are covered.
Do you offer counselling in my native language?
Our counsellors are proficient in a range of languages in addition to English. It can be helpful to have counselling in your native language, but it is far more important to speak to someone who understands the unique experiences and challenges of the international life. Above all, our expat-specialised counsellors speak the universal language shared by those who lead an international life.
Are the sessions recorded? Can I get the recording of our session?
There is no recording, for reasons of confidentiality.
How do I give feedback or make a complaint?
We are as open to receiving compliments as we are to accepting suggestions and complaints when your expectations are not met. If you have a complaint, we hope that we can talk about it and find a solution together. If this is not applicable and if you feel all other options are exhausted, you can submit your complaint to the following professional bodies: NIP (https://psynip.nl) and NVPA (https://www.nvpa.org/).
